More widely, Steve remains an active full time hospital clinician and a regular examiner for the internationally recognised MRCP(UK) specialist examination for hospital physicians in training.  He is particularly interested in infection-related matters, most especially the world-wide flow of infection, infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance across international borders.

It is through this combined interest in hospital accreditation and in international health and tropical medicine that Steve has become increasingly interested in medical tourism.  Steve is a WHO Consultant on Medical Tourism, and a member of the founding group of the "UK Medical Tourism Academic Group".

Leila Wilcox
Leila Wilcox; Founder, Angelis Insurance

Following surgery abroad, Leila realised that anyone who travelled abroad for any type of treatment (including dental work) wasn’t covered under standard travel insurance as there is a clause that ‘a person is not covered if going for medical treatment’.

Joining forces with Underwriters from Lloyds of London a travel policy has been created specifically for Medical Tourists with unique benefits specifically designed for their needs such as return trips if the treatment is unsuccessful.

Angelis is now working towards offering group policies to hospitals and clinics ensuring that every international patient they see is fully insured for their trip and treatment.

Leila has spent that past three years attending and speaking at Medical Tourism Conferences throughout the world offering insight into the Insurance market, but also as a previous patient a unique perspective from their point of view – their needs and worries.
